Village Life on the Colorado
Humans have lived on the Colorado River for thousand of years. All the river Yumans practiced floodwater agriculture, growing corn, beans, and squash in the rich silt deposited in the bottomlands by waters receding from floods.

Often the water looked brown to red. That's why the Spaniards named it Río Colorado. The Quechans call it Javi'l (Havil).
